Pittsburg is in the top 15% of the Bay Area

A dubious honor – new analysis shows that Pittsburg is in the top 15% of communities in the Bay Area who are most affected by air pollution.

In recent work, the people who study and regulate air pollution in the Bay Area (BAAQMD – the Bay Area Air Quality Management District) developed a new statistical measure for figuring out which communities experience the most direct health impacts from air pollution. They incorporated

  • rates of cancer,
  • rates of early death, and
  • increased healthcare costs.

Using this method, called the Pollution-Vulnerability Index, they were able to show that Pittsburg is one of the most impacted communities in the Bay Area – something that is not obvious from just looking at the levels of different pollutants.

Below you can see that Pittsburg is one of only 7 communities in the Bay Area to have this distinction. Pittsburg already bears a high burden from pollution. We don’t deserve another large industrial project adding to our toxic load.
